This non-invasive, comprehensive spiral Computed Tomography (CT) scan examines and provides images of the major organs and body systems located in the chest, abdomen and pelvis. It is used to detect heart disease, aortic aneurysms, and cancers of such areas as the lung, liver, kidney, colon, ovary, thyroid, adrenal and lymph - before symptoms occur. This screening can detect masses (cancerous or benign) or other abnormalities, and includes a thorough scan of the lungs, along with a measurement of the level of calcium in the coronary arteries of the heart indicating risk for heart or coronary artery disease. In addition, a comprehensive measure of bone density is performed to evaluate risks for osteoporosis and other potential orthopedic conditions.
People interested in a preventive health care regimen, who are 40 years of age and older, and who have a family history of heart disease, cancer, or osteoporosis should consider having this screening done once every 4 years.
Preparation:
Clear liquids only 4 hours prior

Why it's important
Cardiovascular disease and cancer are the two most common causes of death in the United States. The body screening represents the most proactive method known in modern medicine to detect heart disease and many cancers. A quick and painless body screening may detect heart disease, aneurysms of the aorta, vascular disease, lung tumors, kidney and liver tumors, as well as certain abnormalities in the abdominal and pelvic region. With heart disease and cancer responsible for almost three out of every four deaths, early detection (that is, before a person shows symptoms) is key to effective treatment and recovery.
