Lung Screening

Using a highly sensitive and specific review of the lungs, this spiral CT exam can detect tumors in the earliest stage of disease - when there are no symptoms, but when most lung cancers are curable. This painless, 20-second scan can detect tiny cancer nodules as small as 5mm - which are too small to be seen on a chest x-ray. A lung scan is by far the most effective screening procedure for those at high risk for lung cancer.

Eisenhower Imaging Center, in conjunction with the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center is proud to have been one of 38 facilities worldwide to participate in the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program. The study, published in November of 2006 found that screening smokers for lung cancer with CT lung scans can detect problems early and save lives, much as mammograms do for breast cancer. To Have and Have Not
Why Screen for Lung Cancer?

People urged to consider having this screening done are 50 years of age or older, are smokers, or former smokers who quit less than 20 years ago. Those who have a family history of lung cancer, or have been exposed to second-hand smoke are strong candidates as well. This exam is recommended once every 2 years, especially for current or former smokers.
