Screening FAQ

Who should get a screening?
Everyone who is interested in being an active participant in their good health should consider a screening. People with a family history of heart disease, stroke, cancer, osteoporosis, or other serious health conditions, are especially strong candidates for these procedures.

If you don't have a family history of serious disease or illness, it is still a good idea to get some basic screenings. These will help establish a baseline which your family doctor can use to evaluate any conditions that develop in the future.

Why do I need a screening?
When it comes to your health, knowledge is power. Early detection of cancer and disease can mean the difference between life and death, and being an active participant in your health is an essential component to living a long and happy life.

Screenings of all kinds are an important part of preventive health care. If you have a family history of heart disease, stroke, cancer, osteoporosis or other serious health conditions, screenings are essential for the early detection and treatment; especially because many of these life-threatening conditions develop without any signs or symptoms.

What kind of screening do I need?
Each individual is different, which is why we design our screening programs on an individual basis. Your health status is based on a variety of factors such as family history, lifestyle habits, gender, age and personal health history. We use all of this information to help develop a screening program to specifically target areas where risk factors for specific disease may be increased.

When is the best time for me to have a screening?
Sooner better than later. Some people avoid regular check-ups and health screenings because they are afraid of what they will find out. This is understandable, but not advisable. Advances in medicine and medical technology give us the tools needed to discover and treat serious illness and disease, enabling us to live longer, healthier lives. Screenings generally begin at age 40, with various screenings recommended at different times, dependent upon family and personal medical history. Your physician can help determine which screening is best for you.

Is it a misconception that screenings are bad for me?
Screenings represent the most proactive method known in modern medicine to detect heart disease and many cancers. For persons with a family or personal history of these diseases, a quick, painless screening provides crucial information regarding their health status. Whereas there is always a possibility of a false-positive test result, Eisenhower Imaging Center and its staff of highly qualified physicians prides itself on a zero false-positive rate after 1.5 years, thereby eliminating unnecessary exams, biopsies, etc.

What are the risks of screening radiation?
Risks of screening radiation are negligible. Studies indicate, as an example, if a 45 year old adult were to undergo a full-body CT exam every year for 30 years, he/she would accrue an overall estimated lifetime attributable risk of cancer mortality increase of .05%. Unlike CT, MRI does not use radiation.

What health screenings are available at Eisenhower Imaging Center?
Eisenhower Imaging Center offers a variety of advanced screening programs and packages that use state-of-the-art technology to provide priceless information about your health. This technology allows us to gather valuable information quickly, painlessly and, depending on the scanning procedure, with little or no radiation exposure.

Eisenhower Imaging Center offers the following procedures:

Is contrast required for all screenings?
Most of the screenings at Eisenhower Imaging Center use contrast agents to help highlight internal organs, structures and tissues within the body. They are essential in gathering the clearest images possible. Services provided elsewhere that do not use contrast are of little value. Contrast may be administered through an I.V. (intravenously) or by digestion, depending upon the type of screening to be performed.

What happens to my results?
Once your screenings are done, the images are processed and carefully reviewed by our team of board-certified, sub-specialized radiology physicians. Once completed, we will schedule a private follow-up consultation - generally 30 to 60 minutes in length - to review your screenings with our physician. We take the time to go over your images, discuss recommendations and answer all of your questions so that you can make the most educated and informed decisions about your health. Before leaving, you will receive a complete report of your screenings along with a CD of the images to keep for your records or share with your physician(s). Your results are private and confidential. If your screening reveals no immediate health issue, the results provide a valuable baseline for future exams and evaluations, a significant health management tool.

What about insurance coverage?
Screening exams are not covered by Medicare or other health insurance providers. Payment is, therefore, due at the time of your exam. If, however, a screening exam detects a medical problem, your health insurance provider will cover subsequent treatment (to the extent allowed by your plan) and possibly reimburse you for the cost or a portion of the cost of the screening. Our screening representatives are happy to help you through this process and answer any questions you may have regarding insurance coverage.
